Sonata: the two slope curves for expression and tremolo, with the instrument and mode controls below

Sonata turns one mod wheel into living phrasing. The wheel drives two controllers at once, each through its own curve, and Sonata also reads your notes: it knows when a note starts, how hard, and whether you play legato. So a swell leans in, vibrato waits and comes on by itself, short notes stay clean, and a long note keeps moving. No breath controller needed.

One movement

Two results from a single gesture.

Expression and tremolo each follow their own slope: where on the wheel it starts and ends, how far it reaches, and how it bends. The classic setting lets the swell answer at once while the tremolo waits until you lean in. Drag the handles, or type the values.

It sends CC11 and CC1 by default, but every controller number is yours. A Synth or Library switch tells Sonata whether CC1 is tremolo depth or a dynamic layer, so it speaks the right language to your instrument.

It plays like a player

Sonata reads your notes, not just the wheel.

A bowed string has bow speed, bow force and bow-bridge distance; brass colour follows loudness and rises late and steep. Sonata models that: wheel speed counts as bow speed, every new note gets its own onset, vibrato is held back and fades in, and a held note drifts and sags a little, the way a hand is never quite still.

Choose Violin, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Trombone or Trumpet. Legato carries the line on; a slur dips far less than a new bow stroke.

Auto and the Performer

Let it phrase for you.

In Auto mode you play without touching the wheel and Sonata shapes every note by itself, from its velocity and the lengths you have been playing.

Or hand it a finished part: drop a MIDI file on Sonata and it plays towards the top of each phrase, divides long notes, lets go before a rest, and writes keyswitches for pizzicato where you want them. Drag the result straight back onto a track.
